Teach a summer course at BMSC

Teaching courses at BMSC is both a challenging and rewarding experience. Our proximity to a dynamic coastal environment and our fully equipped laboratories and classrooms makes BMSC a unique teaching and research facility.

If you would you like to teach a undergraduate or graduate course at BMSC, see below:

  1. Submit a proposal - Send a detailed proposal to at least one year in advance of the summer semester that you might be interested in teaching. This proposal should include a course description, course outline, major topics to be addressed in the lecture, lab, and field portions of the course, and basic equiptment list. Courses are usually but not exclusively focused on taking advantage of the opportunities presented by the diverse coastal environment at our doorstep.

  2. Consider the time committment - Our courses are immersion style requiring intense committment from students, TA's and Instructors. The courses run for 3 or 6 weeks in the summer months, from Monday to Saturday with occasional committment on Sundays. Evenings sessions may also be required depending on tides, etc.

  3. What is the salary? - Salaries are competitive, please contact for details.

  4. Accommodation - A private room in a BMSC cabin with shared kitchen is provided for Instructors. Instructors may take advantage of the food services at BMSC staff rates.

Information for non-Canadian Faculty teaching at BMSC

Human Resources at UVic advises that Faculty must apply for a work permit upon entering Canada. Under NAFTA, a labour market opinion from HRSDC is not required before applying for a work permit. Faculty are excluded because you are an academic coming to teach a university course. However, you will need paperwork to establish this when you reach the border.

Immigration Canada requires:

  1. a Passport, valid beyond the term of your appointment.
  2. birth Certificate or Citizenship Papers
  3. letter of appointment that clearly states the course you are teaching is a university course. You will be mailed an appointment letter that includes this information. Make sure you have this letter with you at the border.
  4. your transcript and CV to establish your qualifications as a university professor.
  5. $150 (CDN) to pay for the work permit.

In addition, UVIC requires a Social Insurance Number (SIN) with an expiry date on the card. If your card does not have an expiry date, you must apply for a new one.

To apply for a new SIN call Services Canada at 1-800-206-7218, option 3.

Finally, it was suggested that you try to cross the border during working hours. This would allow Immigration Canada to contact BMSC if they had concerns.

Teaching Assistants

BMSC hires Teaching Assistants for both its Summer and Fall Program courses.
*Positions currently available

Ideal TA applicants are currently registered graduate students familiar with the ecology, biology, and species local to Barkley Sound. Applicants from member universities will be given priority. For field courses that require students to be transported by boats, Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certification is required.

Courses at BMSC are immersion-based requiring an intense commitment from students and instructors. Courses run Monday – Saturday, with occasional commitments on Sundays. TAs are expected to work ~60-70 hours/week.

In addition, TA’s are expected to arrive on the Friday before the course starts for safety and boating orientation and to remain after the course ends to ensure proper clean-up.

The ability to make significant contributions to teaching of course material is desirable. Please see detailed Summer and Fall course descriptions.
