Student Application Procedure

To apply for the summer program at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC), students must:
1) Complete and submit the electronic application form below (electronic submission).
2) Send the application fee to BMSC
3) Submit required documents(listed below) to BMSC. Required documents do not need to be sent together.

You will be notified by e-mail when your application is complete.

The Director of BMSC has final authority in accepting students for courses.

APPLICATION FEE

A $50 application fee (cheque or money order payable to Bamfield Marine Science Centre, or credit card by phone) refundable only upon course cancellation.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:

  1. One set of transcripts for all post-secondary academic activities (official or un-official).
  2. A brief statement of interest (max 300 words) explaining the appropriateness of the requested course(s) to your own professional development. If you are applying for more than one course, you may choose to submit a customized statement for each. NOTE: This is not required if you are applying for the Archaeology course. Please complete the BMSC Archaeology Field School application instead

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:

- DIRECTED STUDIES: Project proposal and letter from a supervising faculty member. Contact the University Programs Coordinator if you need help finding a faculty member to supervise your project.

- COASTAL FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY: BMSC Archaeology Field School Application (in addition to general application form)

– TO USE SCUBA:
Review: BMSC dive safety policy
Note: All certification must be valid to the end of the course period.

  1. Copy of nationally recognized SCUBA certification (eg. PADI, ACUC, SSI, CMAS, BSAC, SDI, NAUI).
  2. Signed BMSC SCUBA Diver Liability Waiver.
  3. Completed BMSC SCUBA Diver Clearance Form.
  4. Completed SCUBA Dive medical examination form. Alternatively, current dive medical examination form from BMSC last summer, PADI, etc.).
  5. Evidence of equipment service within the last year (i.e. dated receipt, test certificate or report).
  6. Copy of valid First Aid certification that includes CPR.
  7. Copy of valid certification for Oxygen Administration.
  8. Copy of certification for Diver Rescue and Accident Management.

Course Selection:

Only one course can be taken at a time. However, you may take two consecutive three-week courses within each Block. You may take a total of 1-6 courses.

If you would like to take a six-week course, please make sure that you select the course in both the first AND second half of the block

COMPARATIVE BIOMECHANICS spans Block IIB & IIIA. Make sure to select both if you would like to enrol in this course

PCOC = Pleasure Craft Operator's Card. SVOP-C = Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Certification. NOTE: You must have a current SVOP, Marine Emergency Duties-A3, Restricted Operator's Certificate (Maritime), and Marine Basic First Aid for your SVOP-C to be valid. It is MANDATORY that you possess PCOC or SVOP-C to operate a boat in Canada
