Fall Program 2012: Sept 4 - Dec 14

Fall Students write:

The Fall Semester at the Centre is an intense, immersion experience in the marine sciences. We inspire investigation, promote critical thinking and offer students the opportunity to conduct an independent research project.

Students take a full course load of five courses. Three courses run in successive 3.5-week blocks while two courses extend throughout the length of the program (see schedule). Classes are scheduled from Monday to Saturday, and involve lectures, discussions, laboratory, and field excursions. All courses are fourth-year senior undergraduate courses.

The Courses:

Ecological Adaptations of Seaweeds (3.5 wks)
Explore morphological, physiological, biomechanical, and reproductive adaptations of seaweeds to a variety of environments. Field experiments will demonstrate some of these adaptations & field data will provide the basis for theoretical considerations.

Marine Population Ecology and Dynamics (3.5 wks)
An analytical approach to the study of marine ecology and marine populations. Intertidal and subtidal communities will be examined, with emphasis on the biota of the Barkley Sound region.

Structure and Function in Animals (3.5 wks)
Examine the structure and function of marine animals using a multi-level approach. Biomechanics, nervous systems and behaviour, locomotion and feeding will receive particular attention. A series of laboratory exercises will demonstrate some of the principles.

Directed Studies (14 wks)
Undertake an independent research project in your field of interest. Projects will be designed to take advantage of laboratory and/or field opportunities. Resident researchers, faculty, and staff will provide mentorship.

Seminars and Papers in Marine Science (14 wks)
Discussion groups meet weekly to debate issues generated by selected journal articles and participate in formal seminars presented by invited guest speakers. This course will develop critical thinking and analytical skills.

PREREQUISITES
Students accepted into the program will have completed second year in one of the following disciplines; biology, zoology or botany. Courses in introductory invertebrates, non-vascular plants, introductory ecology, and introductory statistics are strongly recommended. Please contact BMSC or visit your university representative or ambassador for details. While priority will be given to degree program students registered at member universities, other applications from well-qualified persons are welcomed and will be considered on their individual merits.
