Brett's list of things to bring for the Fall...(pdf)

Brett says: "I think this will help the student think about what they are packing (instead of just blindly packing the things on the list)."
  • Rubber boots with a really good tread on them, and the taller the better and preferably with an insole. You are in them all the time; so don’t worry about spending too much money!
  • Extra batteries (AAs and AAAs)
  • Warm, water-wicking socks, or boot inserts
  • Those gloves with the grippy palms (neoprene), that are water-resistant – don’t know what they are called, sorry. Otherwise, several pairs of plain cotton gloves.
  • Winter jacket (not just a raincoat)
  • An extra blanket for drafty nights in the lab/office
  • A good digital camera (one that can take video too) – Lots of us used our personal cameras to record our experiments, some people had to borrow others, there just aren’t enough Station cameras and camcorders
  • An extra SD card for your camera (I would recommend having a 4GB card)
  • A pair of runners/sneakers or hiking boots you don’t mind destroying
  • Sleeping bag and tent are good but NOT a necessity
  • A nice warm hat (I forgot one…. It was not fun)
  • Warm clothes in general (fleece, wool… you can’t have too much)
  • Laptop = ESSENTIAL!!!
  • An external hard drive is a good idea because photos, videos and data take up a lot of space – I had to order one while I was there.
  • Hip waders, wetsuit and snorkel gear (depending on the availability of the snorkelling gear that was donated is)
  • FOOD! Even though you get three square meals a day, having snacks when burning the midnight oil is a good idea.
  • Cash – that ATM at the store is unreliable and COINS for laundry. The general store lady won’t give you change!
  • Field guides should be looked at before students get to the coast (for students not from BC especially, to familiarize them with the flora and fauna. Whelks to Whales, etc)
  • USB drive
  • Apparently external speakers were popular
  • Reusable water bottles and a Thermos
  • A dry bag (dive bag) for keeping stuff in when in the field NOT just a lame backpack!
  • Hangers… apparently there were none in Cabin 1
  • Personal coffee!!! Beans, grinder and filter.
  • Long johns
  • A Pelican case for cell and camera in the field
  • Any old statistics and ecology notes!
