Heading out on a lovely day
Looks like the weather cooperated for the Scientific Diving course! As in 2009, Isabelle, Tom and Siobhan led the students on an action packed three weeks!

Loligo's maiden voyage following relaunch today!
Thanks to BMSC Skipper John Richards who spent many hours this winter giving Loliga a much needed face-lift. The dory is an essential link for students to access the west side of Bamfield.
Thanks John!

Filmmaking 2009Summer is coming to BMSC and we are looking forward to another busy year. This year we are offering a new course, Science Journalism, followed by the Scientific Filmmaking course (see 2009 course profile), which was hugely successful last summer.
Check our Summer 2010 course listing, as applications are still being accepted!

Cultural event of the year? Every year Halloween festivities at Bamfield include pumpkin carving, fireworks hosted by the Bamfield fire department and a dance at the community hall. Despite a H1N1 scare this week, the fall program students participated in full force with brilliant costumes in the spirit of Halloween! -jc

The Fall Program students presented their proposed research for the term today. Ocean acidification, Color polymorphism, algae biomechanics are just some of the topics covered by the broad scope of interests this year’s Directed Studies course is tackling. Cooperate, Communicate, Collaborate! -jc

The Marine Population Ecology and Dynamics course, led by Dr. Marty Krkosek and Ashley Park, wrapped up this week. As a thank you to their ecology instructors, the students wrote and performed a song at Pachena beach around a campfire - inspired by their lecture material. Salmon make wine! -jc.

Last week, the fall program students and several volunteer graduate students camped out in the Deer Group (Sanford Island) and woke up during the early morning low tide to survey rocky intertidal community structure. This weekend adventure was designed as part of the Long Term Monitoring Project at Ross Islets. This study was initiated by Dr. Amanda Bates in 2006 and has been a staple project in the Fall Programs’s Marine Population Ecology and Dynamics Class. -jc

The first ever Bamfield Great Race. As part of orientation week of the fall program, student teams were sent on a race with stops at 21 different locations all over the town of Bamfield (East and West side). Congratulations to first place winners Tracy, Robin & Fauve! Also congratulations to Jillynne, Christina & Natahs for the most creative teaching lab experimental apparatus!
Thanks to Fall program alumnus Brett Howard for initiating what will hopefully be an annual tradition. -jc
