What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a mediated service that enables students, faculty and staff to obtain library materials not owned by the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre Library. Please read the Interlibrary Loan FAQ for more information.

Locating and Retrieving

There are two basic steps in conducting literature search:

  • Locating
  • Retrieving

To locate a literature, use your own institution's library online catalog or subscribed databases.

To retrieve it, fill out the Interlibrary Loan Form. The literature will be mailed to you.

How long does it take?

Depend on the availibility of the literature, it might take around four days to two weeks to get here. Articles will normally take no longer than five days to get here. Books might take longer than articles.

How much does it cost?

Cost:

  • Book: no charge for now
  • Article: no charge for now

  • BMSC Fall Students
  • Graduate Students conducting Research
  • Program Instructors
  • Staff
  • Teaching Assistants
  • Visiting Researchers

How do I request materials?
To request material, fill out the Interlibrary Loan Form. The literature will be mailed to you.

What materials are available on Interlibrary Loan?

  • Books
  • Photocopies of journal/newspaper articles
  • Microforms
  • Government documents and conference proceedings
  • Some master's and doctoral theses

What materials are NOT available on Interlibrary Loan?

  • Materials already in our collection regardless of form
  • Reference books
  • Entire issues of journals
  • Materials in high use in the lending library
  • Rare and fragile items
  • Materials which are difficult and/or expensive to ship
  • Sound recordings
  • Doctoral dissertations are often not available for loan from U.S. universities. They can usually be purchased from University Microfilms International (UMI) via the Dissertation Express Service. See BMSC Librarian for more information.

What other restrictions apply to Interlibrary Loans?

  • Requests are restricted to items required for research, BMSC employment, thesis or course work.
  • Requests are not accepted for general interest topics, hobbies or genealogical research.

What are the limitations for Summer and Fall Students?
Summer and Fall students are encouraged to select research topics supported by the Library's collection. Teaching Assistants, instructors and the BMSC Librarian may be able to suggest sources owned by the Library so that extensive borrowing is not required. Interlibrary loan materials for Summer and Fall Students will be obtained from Canadian libraries only. Exceptions may be made upon discussion with the course Teaching Assistant and the BMSC Librarian.

What about copyright?
Under the terms of the CANCOPY Agreement and the Copyright Act, the BMSC Interlibrary Loan Service cannot order more than one article at a time from the same issue of a journal or copies that comprise more than 10% of a published work.

How long does it take for materials to arrive?
Depend on the availibility of the literature, it might take around four days to two weeks to get here. Articles will normally take no longer than five days to get here. Books might take longer than articles.

How will I know when the material has arrived?
The material will be put in your mail box upon arrival.

Where do I pick up the material and return it?
All materials that need to be returned will come with a prepaid postal label. Please keep the pakaging when you receive the item. On the due date, please affix the prepaid postal label and drop it into the mail box in the Main Office.

How long is the loan period?
The usual loan period is three weeks. The due date is aways indicated on the item label.

What if I am late returning the material?
If books are kept beyond the due date, interlibrary loan privileges will be suspended until the overdue items are returned. Longer suspensions of privileges may be applied if borrowers are consistently late in returning materials. Borrowers will be charged for lost or damaged items.
