BMSC Library Donation Policy

The Bamfield Marine Station Library welcomes donations of books, periodicals and other materials from faculty, students and the general public. Donations which support the Marine Station's instructional and research needs and enhance the quality of the Library's collection are encouraged.

The librarian will be responsible for administering this policy. After the initial discussion, if the donation is deemed to be of potential value to the library collection, and if the donor wants a tax receipt, then the donor should prepare a list of the materials to be donated for pre-screening by the Library. This list will form the initial documentation upon which tax receipts will be issued. Receipts will be issued only for materials finally accepted into the Library's collections. A tax receipt for a particular year will be issued for materials received by December 31 st of that same year. Assessment of the materials will be made according to fair market value (FMV). If the value of the donation exceeds $1000, the assessment will be made by a professional at the donor's expense.

Donors will be expected to deliver their gifts to the Library at their own expense. The Bamfield Marine Station will assist in finding a mode of transport, where possible.

The Library will accept only unconditional donations. We reserve the right to retain or dispose of donated material according to the needs of the Bamfield Marine Station. Once offered and accepted, donations become the property of the Library and cannot be returned to the donor. Accepted materials will be integrated with the rest of the Library collection.

Selection Criteria - Criteria for acceptance of donations include:

  • clean, unmarked and in good repair
  • relevant to the current and future teaching/research activities of our users
  • free of licensing, copyright or other restrictions

Titles that duplicate existing library resources will be accepted where appropriate.

You can also donate used textbooks to Better World Books. Click here for more information.
