BMSC Awards

The BMSC endowment with the Vancouver Foundation has sufficiently recovered that we can once again offer graduate scholarships. At the 2010 management council meeting it was resolved that scholarship awards will be decided by the Academic and Research Committee well in advance of the research season to facilitate planning by successful applicants.

The deadline this year will be 17 February,2012.

WCUMSS Graduate Student Awards

The purpose of these awards is to encourage Ph.D. and M.Sc. candidates to take advantage of the research opportunities at BMSC, particularly in the period between September and April. For 2012-2013 there will be one scholarship of $6000 and two awards of $1500.  Only in exceptional circumstances will awards be considered for the May-August period.

In the case of the $6000 scholarship, the graduate student must reside at Bamfield for a four month period, between September and April, and must not teach or hold a major scholarship during this period. Graduate student supervisors are expected to assume responsibility for meeting the direct costs of the student's research including fees for research space, supplies, technical assistance, travel costs etc. Preference is given to students from member universities but others are invited to apply.  Only students that can meet the residency requirements will receive awards.  Awards must be taken up in the year they are awarded.

The deadline for all financial assistance applications is February 17, 2012.

Special Bursaries and Scholarships

*Richard Peter Graduate Student Publication Award*
This award honours the memory of Dr. Richard Peter. The Richard Peter Award was established in the summer of 2007 by the BMSC Graduate Student Society to reward timely publication of graduate research conducted at BMSC. The 2011 recipient will be determined by an award committee of professors from the member universities. A cash prize of $250 will accompany the award.

F.W. Benton Memorial Bursary
This bursary honours the memory of Frank William Benton, an ardent conservationist and sportsman, who devoted many years of effort to the preservation of the wilderness and its creatures. No award will be made in 2012-2013 in order to preserve the fund capital.

Sigurd Tveit Memorial Scholarships
This award honours the memory of Sigurd Tveit. For many years Capt. and Mrs. Tveit provided students and scientists with assistance in collecting marine specimens from the waters of Barkley Sound, using their vessels, "Leik" and "Havorn". Later, Sigurd captained the BMSC research vessel, the M.V. Alta.

John Boom Memorial Scholarship
This award was established by the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre to honour the memory and contributions of Mr. John Boom. It is awarded annually to a graduate student from member universities who plans to work at BMSC for a minimum of four months and who demonstrates an ability to work independently and shows initiative and innovation in her/his research. Preference will be given to students working at BMSC from Sept to April.   Students may hold teaching or research assistantships or other awards , as supplementary support during a period of research and residence at the Centre.
