Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

The BMSC Fluid Dynamics Lab houses on of Canada's largest flumes. It is available to industry and adademia for research and commercial project work on a fee-for-service basis.

The flume is equipped with a 2-D Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) system for flow visualization featuring a large view-field (0.6 m2) and vector capture rates of 10 x/s. The PIV system features La Vision software and has the ability to build serial sections of flow profiles.

The images above are courtesy of Chris Neufeld and show vectors of flow while a barnacle is feeding.

Specifications

  • Size: 12 m long x 2 m wide x 1 m deep
  • Volume: 45,000 litres
  • Flow rate: ranges from very slow (0.01 m/s) up to > 0.5 m/s
  • Sustained flow: ~1 m3 / sec
  • Temperature range: 5 - 20° C.
  • Glass sided for maximum visibility
  • Equipped with a 2-D Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) system for flow visualization
