Research Services - Overview

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre provides year-round research facilities, basic and specialty equipment, and technical assistance to scientists from the five western Canadian universities as well as visiting scientists from other Canadian and international institutions.

BMSC offers unparalleled access to a wide array of environments - including unique coastal, marine and rainforest habitats and exceptional species diversity.

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre announces a new round of competitive research grants for research to be conducted at BMSC. We anticipate awarding up to $10,000 in 2013. [MORE...]

Apply for space:


New and Returning Researchers

To apply, please submit the following by e-mail:

1. Application for Research Facilities: Complete the Research Application Form and e-mail to the . It is recommended you communicate with the Research Coordinator directly to discuss your needs, contact information below.

2. Application for Housing: Please e-mail to reserve on-site accomodations.

3. Apply for a DFO collection permit if working with animals.

4. Animal Utilization Proposals: Complete the relevant form and e-mail to the Coordinator.


Applicants for research space should review the information links below and determine if and how they will influence their research plans. There are specific policies relating to exotic species restrictions, collecting and caring for organisms, boat use, SCUBA diving, the use of isotopes, and animal care.

Also, researchers should review the following before applying for research space and housing at BMSC:

  • Animal Care Policies - Researchers using vertebrates or invertebrates during their research must submit their completed Animal Utilization Proposals (AUP) at least 30 days before arrival at BMSC.

Graduate students are encouraged to apply for fellowship funding.

new Boat Use update:

Visiting labs and researchers who bring their own boats are required to follow all Transport Canada regulations. Researchers are responsible for providing their own safety equipment and a radio. BMSC can no longer provide these items on loan, but will have safety kits and radios for sale. Contact , 2nd Skipper, for price and availability.

Library access update:

Short term access to UVic library online services including e-journals and databases can be arranged for visiting researchers and instructors. Contact , BMSC Librarian, or call (250) 728-3301 ext. 213
