"There's no place like home" by Erika Grebeldinger

Erika writes:
"I spent the summer at BMSC in 2008, assisting as a work-study student and took two courses: Evolution and Adaptation in the Intertidal and Crustacean biology. It was a fabulous summer and I had the opportunity to work on multiple programs as a work-study student.

I have finished my undergraduate degree at UVic and presently working on a Rockfish Conservation project as a scientific SCUBA diver through Simon Fraser University. We have conducted rockfish, invertebrate and kelp surveys throughout Howe Sound, Sechelt, southern Gulf Islands and the Broken Group Islands.

The pictures I have attached are from Tawanek (close to Davis Bay) while we were working in Sechelt. The camera I used was a Canon G10 with small external strobe in underwater housing."

"BMSC Panorama" by Bob Bright - click on the photograph to view in panorama mode!

Bob writes: "Attached is an image that I'd like to submit for your photo contest in the panoramic category. It was shot on Aug. 15 around 7:00pm, while I was attending one of the BMSC family workshops with my wife and daughters. (We had a great time!!)

The image may look a bit odd to you, because it's a full spherical panorama (i.e., 360-degree coverage in all directions) which has been saved in equirectangular format. It can be re-projected to other formats and cropped in various ways. However, the best way to view it is to click here, which allows you to pan around in any direction without distorting the image."

Technical details: The image is composed of 24 separate shots which were taken on Aug. 15, 2009, beginning at about 7:00pm. The shooting pattern was 5 shots around at -20 degree pitch, plus 2 more for full zenith coverage and 1 for the nadir. All shots were exposure-bracketed at +2 and -2 stops. The 24 images were then stitched/fused/blended and post-processed on a computer using open source software.

Camera: Canon Rebel XT (ISO 100, F3.5, 1/80s & 1/20s & 1/320s)
Lens: Tokina 10-17 fisheye zoom lens (10mm)
Tripod: Benro carbon fiber, w/ Benro ball head
Panorama head: Nodal Ninja Mk II
Software: hugin, enfuse, enblend, gimp
