How do I get to Bamfield?

Bamfield is accessible by road, ferry or float plane charter. See Getting to Bamfield.

Where do I go when I first arrive at BMSC?

Visitors arriving between 0830am-4:30pm should check in at the administration office of our main building. After hours, accommodation assignments are posted on the Arrivals board in the lobby of the main building. A site map is available on line, and is printed on the reverse side of the assignment notice, or download a printable version of the map before your visit.

How do I get my mail at BMSC?

Mail can be forwarded to BMSC, 100 Pachena Road, Bamfield, BC, V0R 1B0. Mail is delivered to Bamfield via ferry on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and is distributed Tuesday, Thursday and Monday through a central mail box system located outside the administration office of the main building. An outgoing mail slot is located next to the mail boxes with mail leaving BMSC on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Postage stamps and courier service are available through the main office during business hours. There is a Canada Post outlet located on the west side for other postal service needs.

Can I make long distance calls or fax while at BMSC?

All personal calls must be made from the payphones or common-use phones located on campus. We recommend you bring/use a phone card, credit card or call collect. Alternatively you may wish to bring a cell phone, however, cellular reception in Bamfield is spotty.

Fax service is available through the administration office in the main building during office hours. A nominal fee will be charged. Researchers can arrange for a long distance charge account for the period of their stay.

How can I be reached while I'm at BMSC?

There are a number of payphones and common-use phones on campus. We suggest you convey the telephone numer of the phone where you wish to be reached and pre-arrange a time to receive the call. Bring a cell phone if you wish, however, cellular reception is spotty. Computer user accounts are available for internet and emailing.

In the event of an emergency, visitors may be contacted through the main business line (250) 728-3301.

What medical services are available in Bamfield?

A Red Cross Outpost Hospital, staffed by a Registered Nurse, is located on the east side of Bamfield. The clinic is equipped to handle minor medical emergencies and ailments. Patients with severe medical symptoms or injuries will be evacuated by helicopter or other means to the nearest, appropriate medical centre. Anyone with serious medical conditions should be evaluated by their physician before travelling to Bamfield.

Visitors should bring an adequate supply of prescription medications with them as the closest pharmacy is located in Port Alberni.

Is there a bank in Bamfield?

The closest banks are located in Port Alberni. There is an ATM (with limited funds) located in the Tides and Trails Market store on the east side of Bamfield. We suggest you always keep some cash on hand.

Where can I get groceries and other items?

There are two general stores in Bamfield located on either side of Bamfield Inlet. Each carries a small range of convenience items including dairy, frozen, produce, confectionary and toiletries. Both are authorized BC Liquor outlets. Safeway Market and Quality Foods in Port Alberni accept grocery orders for delivery to BMSC via the Lady Rose Ferry on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. BMSC operates a small scientific stores carrying glassware, standard supplies and stationary for the convenience of station users. Researchers are asked to give advance notice if they require large quantities or specialized items. A selection of BMSC signature wear and souvenir items are also available for sale.

What clothing should I bring?

Bamfield weather is typical of a west coast rainforest climate. In other words it is generally cooler and rain is frequent. Good rain gear - jacket, pants and rubber boots - is highly recommended. Pack warm, comfortable clothing and include a toque and gloves during the colder months. The terrain in Bamfield can be rough and the roads and trails at BMSC are gravel. Bring a pair of sturdy shoes or boots with good ankle support.

What else should I bring?

Flashlight. Camera. Binoculars. Customary, over-the-counter medical supplies, i.e. allergy meds, aspirin, etc. Most accommodation is shared so please be kind to your roomates and bring headphones for your Walkman or other portable media device.

What about pets?

Pets are nor permitted on campus.
